Early ferry to Havelock or Neil? Why staying near Haddo Jetty in Port Blair (Sri Vijaya Puram) makes your Andaman trip easier.
Almost every Andaman trip starts and ends in Port Blair (Sri Vijaya Puram). You land at the airport here, you catch your ferries to Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil (Shaheed Dweep) from here, and most visitors spend at least one or two nights here between islands.
Choosing the right place to stay in Port Blair can save you hours of travel and a lot of early-morning stress. Here is what to think about.
New to Port Blair? Our First Time Traveler's Guide to Port Blair covers what to see and do. This post focuses on one thing: where to stay so your ferry mornings are easy.
1. Stay close to your ferry jetty
Ferries to Havelock and Neil usually leave early in the morning. If your hotel is far from the jetty, you may need to leave before sunrise and pay for a long cab ride.
Several of the private ferries to Havelock and Neil, such as Makruzz, Green Ocean and Nautika, depart from Haddo Jetty. Always check the jetty printed on your ticket. Staying near Haddo means a short drive on the morning of your ferry, not a rush across town.
2. Think about the airport too
Port Blair's airport is small, and the city is compact. Most central areas are within 10 to 20 minutes by car. A place that is close to both the jetty and the airport is ideal, because you will usually use both on the same trip.
3. Choose quiet over the main road
Port Blair's main roads can be busy and noisy, especially in the morning. After a long flight or a day of island hopping, a quiet room helps you sleep well before an early ferry. Look for a stay on a side road rather than right on the main road.
4. Check what is included
Small details make a big difference in the Andamans:
- Breakfast: an early, filling breakfast before a ferry or a day of sightseeing.
- Hot water and Wi-Fi: not every budget stay has both round the clock.
- Check-in and check-out times: ferry and flight times rarely line up with standard hotel timings, so ask about them before you book.
- Help with ferries and sightseeing: a host who books your ferry tickets and arranges cabs saves you a lot of time.
5. Book direct when you can
Online travel sites are handy for comparing, but they often add commission to the price. Many small properties offer a better rate when you book on their own website, and you can talk to the owner directly about early arrivals, late departures or special requests.
