When to visit the Andaman Islands: weather, sea conditions, crowds and prices through the year, from a local homestay in Port Blair.
The Andaman Islands are beautiful all year, but the weather and the sea change a lot from season to season. The right time to visit depends on what you want: calm seas for diving, cool weather for sightseeing, or lower prices and fewer crowds.
Here is what to expect through the year, from our family homestay in Port Blair (Sri Vijaya Puram).
October to November: green islands, fewer crowds
The monsoon is ending, the islands are lush and green, and the seas start to calm down. You may still get some showers, especially in November. This is a good time for a quieter trip, with easier ferry bookings and better room rates before the peak season.
December to February: peak season
This is the most popular time to visit. The weather is pleasant, the sea is usually calm and the skies are clear, which makes it ideal for beaches, island hopping and sightseeing. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of the year.
Book your ferries to Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil (Shaheed Dweep), and your rooms, well in advance. Flight fares also rise quickly at this time.
March to May: best for diving and snorkelling
The days get hotter and more humid, but the sea is often at its calmest and clearest. Many divers consider this the best season for scuba diving and snorkelling, with excellent underwater visibility. Start your sightseeing early in the morning and rest during the hottest part of the day.
June to September: monsoon season
The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas. Ferries can be delayed or cancelled at short notice, and some water sports may be suspended. In return, you get the lowest prices, very few tourists and green, misty islands.
If you visit in the monsoon, keep a spare day in your plan in case a ferry is cancelled, and stay flexible.
So when should you go?
- For first-time visitors: December to February, for the most reliable weather.
- For diving and snorkelling: March to May, for calm, clear water.
- For a quieter, cheaper trip: October to November.
- For budget travellers who don't mind rain: June to September, with a flexible plan.
